FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 16, 2013
MP Yvonne Jones today welcomed Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) board of directors and Inuit Circumpolar Council – Canada (ICC-Canada) delegates to Labrador, as both organizations hold their annual general meetings in the beautiful northern community of Hopedale, Nunatsiavut. ITK will hold its meetings on Tuesday, September 17, while ICC-Canada will meet on Wednesday, September 18.
“I wish to extend a warm welcome to both these important groups as they embark on their meetings over the next two days,” said Ms. Jones. “ITK and ICC-Canada perform a valued service to Inuit in Canada and abroad. These organizations give leaders and groups the ability to speak as one voice and to lobby on issues that concern all Inuit.”
ITK was founded in 1971 and represents four regions, Nunatsiavut (Labrador), Nunavik (northern Quebec), Nunavut, and the Inuvialuit Settlement Region in the Northwest Territories. The current President is Mr. Terry Audla.
ICC-Canada was founded in 1977 and represents close to 150,000 Inuit of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Chukka (Russia). As well, the organization holds Consultative Status II at the United Nations. The current president of ICC-Canada is Mr. Duane Smith, and is also the ICC Vice-Chair.
