MP Yvonne Jones believes the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is letting opportunities slip through its fingers as a new pre-feasibility study is commissioned by the Government of Quebec of having a second railway for transporting iron ore out of Labrador. Ms. Jones has stated the Labrador Trough is a resource rich region and the government should be taking steps to see how a new railway could be advantageous for the province.
“A new railway system in Labrador could be an important asset and can create many years of employment. The fact that the Dunderdale Government has done nothing to move forward on such a fantastic opportunity is irresponsible,” said Ms. Jones. “Labrador should be the next home for a railway to support the mining industry.”
The Provincial Government did in fact contract a company in 2011 to conduct a study, but still refuses to produce the findings. Stassinu Stantec Ltd Partnership analyzed the building port facilities and a railway from Western Labrador to central and/or the southern coast of Labrador. Ms. Jones demanded the provincial government start taking action before another province once again moves in on our resource sector.
“This is a strong province with intelligent and hardworking people. It’s high-time this administration start working with companies and groups in Labrador to find strategic and beneficial solutions for the iron ore that is being shipped out every day from our province. We can’t let opportunity after opportunity fall off the rails and I call on Premier Dunderdale to publish their feasibility study and start moving on this idea that could benefit the entire province.”
