A large player in Labrador’s success has passed away. Melvin Woodward was a household name in Labrador; a legend to many people. His name is synonymous with Newfoundland and Labrador business success, vision and commitment.
Having hailed from Boat Harbour on the Great Northern Peninsula and spent that last 55 years in Labrador. He and his wife Sibyl along with their children have contributed to the economy and the community in many ways.
Jones went on to say Mr. Woodward was most known for his bold, visionary business investments. He proved that the North was a place of opportunity through his many successes at the Woodward Group of Companies. His investment in business extended to investment in communities, charities and people.
For many young Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, he was the example that anything was possible. He came to Labrador looking to make enough money to marry his wife Sibyl and stayed to embrace the life here. From working on the docks to owning the largest marine fleet in the province, it was no small acquisition to foster, but he did it and kept going. He looked to the North, he was not deterred by snow and ice but rather intrigued by the challenge it posed. He was very proud to grow his companies into Nunavut and became the key distributor of fuel Services across the Eastern Arctic.
A tremendous player in the Liberal party going back to Premier Smallwood and Premier Wells, he was always one to speak his mind and stay on top of current events.
I once asked him how does one become so successful? He said ‘you work hard and hire people that are smarter then you’. I always felt that was the best compliment he could give his employee’s and his staff. For he credited them to for his success.
His many initiatives will continue to grow in Labrador and the Province for many generations to come. He will be greatly missed by Family, friends people throughout the Province.
On behalf of all Labradorians I extend my deep sympathy to the Woodward family and our gratitude for Mr. Woodward’s contributions.
His loss is great.
Sincerely,
Yvonne Jones, MP
