Government of Canada invests in Infrastructure at Wabush Airport, Newfoundland and Labrador

The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of local airports to connect rural communities with major centres across the country, providing essential services through safe and efficient airport operations.

Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament (Labrador) and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, on behalf of the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, today announced that the Government of Canada is investing in two major infrastructure projects at Wabush Airport, Newfoundland and Labrador: a Parking Lot Expansion & Air Terminal Building Access Road Realignment and a New Parallel Taxiway & Apron Expansion.

The parking lot expansion and Air Terminal Building access road realignment will increase parking capacity, help maintain safety for airport users and improve the overall groundside efficiency.

The new parallel taxiway and expanded apron are required to help maintain airside safety and improve the runway system efficiency.

The projects will represent an investment of $30.5 million for the Wabush Airport. Two contracts were awarded to a local construction company, Grey Rock Services Inc., to carry out both infrastructure projects.

QUICK FACTS

The Wabush Airport is owned and operated by Transport Canada.
In 2015, an additional $11.9 million was invested in the Wabush Airport for the Runway Rehabilitation Project. The Wabush Airport serves three mining communities, Wabush, NL, Labrador City, NL and Fermont, QC, with a combined population of approximately 15,000 people.
Regular flights provide service to a number of other communities including Montreal, Quebec City, Halifax and Goose Bay, providing scheduled passenger and air charter services, cargo services, mining exploration and medevac services.
