Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador investing in municipal road work

Tuesday, August 16th 2016 – Corner Brook, NL

Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador, and Lisa Dempster, Member of the House of Assembly for Cartwright – L’Anse au Clair, are pleased to announce today joint federal and provincial funding for paving of municipal roads in Red Bay, Labrador.

Of the $6.2 million in projects approved in the second round of funding under the New Building Canada Small Communities Fund, the federal government is contributing $2,090,275, the provincial government is contributing $3,502,811, and the remainder will be cost-shared by the municipalities. These projects are in addition to the 28 Small Communities Fund projects announced in May, and include important improvements to roadways, bridges and recreational infrastructure across the province.

For Red Bay, this means nearly $740,000 invested in much needed repairs for the road.

QUOTES

“I’m excited by the continued cooperation between our two levels of government for the benefit of Labrador’s communities. By working together better than we have in over a decade, we can make real change. These road improvements have been a long time coming. Red Bay is one of the oldest fishing stations in the Labrador Straits, and a World Heritage site. Good transportation networks attract further economic development, and make Red Bay, and all the communities in southern Labrador a more safe and attractive destination for tourists and Labradorians alike.” – Labrador MP Yvonne Jones

“This announcement once again shows the benefit of a strong partnership with our colleagues in Ottawa.  Red Bay, is an extraordinary world-class tourist attraction.  This investment will go a long way toward maintaining this historic site as both a cultural and economic development initiative.” – Lisa Dempster, MHA Cartwright L’Anse au Clair
