Investments from the federal government will enable local organizations to deliver improved services and support to assist business growth in Labrador West. The Community Recreation Rebroadcasting Service (CRRS) will expand its current fibre optic infrastructure to provide additional capacity for businesses in the region and the Labrador West Chamber of Commerce will host a series of business and industry events throughout the year.
Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), announced more than $395,000 for the two projects today.
CRRS, a not-for-profit organization, is receiving $295,858 from ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund (ICF) to expand its current fibre optic network by installing additional pole line hardware, fibre optics and related infrastructure. These upgrades will help alleviate network congestion and provide additional capacity for local businesses and communities. This investment will benefit residents and businesses in Labrador City and Wabush by providing faster, more reliable fibre optic service.
In addition, a $99,500 investment from ACOA’s Business Development Program (BDP) enabled the Labrador West Chamber of Commerce to deliver the Women in Business Leadership Conference and Tradex earlier this week. This investment also supports an Iron Ore Symposium focused on the mining industry from September 11-14, 2017 and a series of business training and improvement workshops throughout the year.
“The Government of Canada is committed to helping Canadian businesses grow, innovate and create well-paying jobs for the middle class and those working hard to join it. Through investments like the ones announced today, companies in Labrador West will benefit from a range of business development support, including improved fibre optic services and learning initiatives.” –The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA
