STATEMENT BY MP YVONNE JONES ON HER NEW ROLE AS PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY TO THE MINISTER OF INTERGOVERNMENTAL AND NORTHERN AFFAIRS AND INTERNAL TRADE

MP Yvonne Jones Looking forward to her new appointment as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Intergovernmental and Northern Affairs and Internal Trade

Yvonne Jones, MP for Labrador and former Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs is excited to accept the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Intergovernmental and Northern Affairs and Internal Trade.

“I am very proud of the confidence the Prime Minister has placed in me to serve Canadians in this position. I am also delighted to work ‎with Minister Dominic LeBlanc on the important issues that impact provinces and territories in our Country.”

Ms. Jones has served in elected politics both as a Municipal Councilor and a Provincial Member of the House of Assembly in NL before entering Federal politics. While in Provincial politics she served at Minister of Fisheries and Minister for the Status of Women. She also served as Opposition House Leader and as Leader of the Provincial Liberal Government and Official Opposition. Her most recent experience as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Crown- Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs make her well suited for her new role.
She is proud of her Inuit ancestry and of her home province of Newfoundland and Labrador. She continues to be a strong advocate in advancing Northern and Indigenous people and communities across Canada’s North.

Background

Yvonne Jean Rumbolt-Jones was born in St Anthony, NL and raised on the South Coast of Labrador in Mary’s Harbour. She studied journalism and worked at the Evening Telegram in St. John’s before taking a position as researcher and writer with Memorial University’s Labrador Institute. Ms. Jones later worked on contract with Canada Employment Corporation until entering Provincial Politics in 1996.‎ There she served as a member of the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador for Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair . She also held positions such as Parliamentary Secretary to the Department of Works, Services and Transportation and to the Department of Health. She held critic roles in Natural Resources, Health and Finance and served as Opposition House Leader. In 2003, Ms. Jones became the first woman in the province to be appointed Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. She was also the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.
