It was a Cold February day in 1996 when I set out on that first Campaign in Southern Labrador looking to be the newly elected Independent MHA for Cartwright L’anse au Clair

As I trekked through the remote isolated communities by snowmobile I was met by large smiles, warm wood fires and hospitality like none other. My campaign was all about connecting communities by road. And so the Trans Labrador Highway to the south was the key message. On those long, cold snowmobile rides between the towns late at night I would dream of one day driving home on a paved road…That day is here- this weekend I drove from the Labrador Straits to Lodge Bay near my  Mary’s Harbour home on a paved highway!! It was very emotional for me and even more so to know in just a few more years all those communities will be paved.

Thank you to all who believed, lobbied and worked hard to make it a reality. Thank you to the many construction workers who knows very well the challenge of building roads in the subarctic of Labrador.

In 1997 with then Premier Brian Tobin and MP Lawrence O’brien I stood in the All Grade school in Mary’s Harbour  and MC’ed the announcement of the first 410 million dollar investment all approved and negotiated by them Prime Minister Chrétien. My fate in the Liberal Party was sealed that day and in 1999 I drove over the first stretch of gravel road and campaigned as Yvonne Jones the Liberal Candidate.

In 2016 As the MP for Labrador I stood in the same town with Premier Dwight Ball and MHA Lisa Dempster to announce the paving of the TLH amongst some very proud people.

To date through the commitment of all Labrador Elected officials and several governments there has been approximately $600million invested over 800 kilometres of road built and 7 bridges it has been quite the journey but it’s not over yet.
