STATEMENT BY MP JONES ON ANNOUNCEMENTS IN NAIN AND HOPEDALE

On Saturday, August 24 and 25 2019, Member of Parliament for Labrador, Yvonne Jones, made a series of announcements in Nain and Hopedale Labrador. She was Joined by members of the Community, the Nunatsivut Government and the Town Councils
The Announcement included;
- $1.3 million dollars to develop, test and evaluate a new maritime information system. This system will allow near real-time information on a range of data including weather, wind speed and vessel locations enhancing marine traffic monitoring and management.
- Under ACOAs women Entrepreneurship Program the Government of Canada selected businesses lead by women across Canada to boost them in there Business Ideas. In Labrador Patti Dicker was selected and will receive $100,000 dollars for renovation and enhanced energy efficiency of the Atsanik Inn in Nain.
- $199,395 dollars to conduct a pre-feasibility assessment of the Nain Airport. This funding will enable the hiring of expertise to collect data and to provide guidance in the planning for a new airport in the community.
- $404,074 dollars to the Okalakatiget Society for their annual television and radio broadcasting project. This funding will allow the Okalakatiget Society to continue to generate and encourage public awareness and discussion around key social, political and environmental issues while promoting Inuit language and culture.
- Housing has been a priority for Indigenous communities . Today I pleased to announced that Government of Canada will invest $9.5 million into Nunatsivut for new housing and renovations in 2019-2020 to date since 2916 we have invested $39.5 million dollars in funding to support Inuit Housing in Rigolet, Postville, Makkovik, Hopedale and Nain. This investment will help to address significant overcrowding and repair needs across Nunatsiavut as well as improve associated socio-economic and health outcomes for Inuit.
- Water testing system for Town of Hopedale at $100 k in addition to the ongoing Water and Sewer work in the Community.
As the Member of Parliament for Labrador, I am pleased with the historic levels of funding that we have leveraged to create stronger, more resilient, and healthier communities across the Nunatsiavut region, both in Housing, healthcare initiatives, and community Infrastructure. It is making a difference.
