MR. LAJEUNESSE
April 27, 2020
Dear Mr Lajeunesse,
I am extremely concerned with the ramp up of additional workers at Bloom Lake because it generates more traffic through Labrador West and the Wabush airport.
Mines in Labrador have shut down all rebuild projects during COVID-19, yet your operation is scaling up on rebuild projects. I don’t feel it is essential at this time and through this email, I am asking the province of NL to not FIFO unnecessary and non-essential workers for mining operations.
The people of Labrador have been very tolerant in allowing your regular FIFO workers continue to transition in and out through Wabush to the mine site across the border. However, I feel this move to FIFO contractors is unnecessary.
I am urging you to transport your workers through Quebec and not Labrador right now and consider using road transportation from Sept’ille.
I trust you understand the tremendous anxiety your actions are causing for the people of Labrador West. At present we have no positive cases and we are working hard to keep it that way.
Coronavirus only spreads when people move, as has been said daily by leading health authorities in Canada.
I am urging you to either follow the regulations of essential workers only or find another way to transport contractors and non-essential workers to your mine site.
With respect,
Yvonne Jones, MP
Labrador
