From: The Office of Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador
Labrador MP, Yvonne Jones, is delighted to, echo the sentiments expressed by the Prime Minister on this significant day. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms stands as a cornerstone of our nation's achievements, embodying the essence of freedom, democracy, and our commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. Today marks 42 years since the adoption of the Charter, a yearly reaffirmation of its enduring principles.
The Charter guarantees the fundamental rights of all Canadians, irrespective of race, age, or ability. It upholds language rights and ensures the freedom to express our beliefs and practice our faith without constraint. Crucially, it upholds the dignity and respect of every individual – principles intrinsic to the Canadian identity.
Additionally, we celebrate the 42nd anniversary of Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, which recognizes and affirms the Indigenous and Treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Section 35 forms the bedrock of our ongoing journey towards reconciliation, notably through the 2023-2028 Action Plan, aligning with the objectives of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. Together, we are committed to forging a renewed and meaningful relationship with Indigenous communities.
On behalf of the Government of Canada, we extend an invitation to all Canadians to delve deeper into the Charter and embrace our collective duty to champion its values. Together, let us safeguard Canada as the beacon of freedom and prosperity we proudly call home.
