Investments in Transportation Infrastructure to Benefit Labrador

Today, Labrador MP, Yvonne Jones, is proud to highlight the significant investments in transportation infrastructure outlined in Budget 2024, aimed at bolstering connectivity, affordability, and safety across Atlantic Canada and beyond. These investments reflect the government's commitment to enhancing transportation networks vital for economic growth, regional development, and the well-being of communities like those in Labrador.
Marine Transportation:
- Marine Atlantic Support: A commitment of $124.1 million over five years has been allocated to Marine Atlantic Inc., with $32.9 million remaining in amortization, to sustain its operations and ensure affordable fares. Additionally, $2.5 million over two years has been earmarked to freeze fares under the Ferry Services Contribution Program until December 2025.
- Confederation Bridge: An allocation of $13.7 million over two years has been designated to Transport Canada to facilitate negotiations for a continued toll freeze on the Confederation Bridge in 2025 and 2026.
Ports Asset Transfer Program:
- A substantial investment of $152 million over five years has been committed to the Ports Asset Transfer Program, aimed at enhancing port infrastructure and operations critical for trade and commerce.
Critical Port Operations Review:
- To address labor-related challenges, $3.1 million over two years has been allocated to the Labour Program to conclude its review on port labor disputes, ensuring smoother operations and fostering constructive labor relations.
Rail and Surface Transportation:
- Electric Vehicles Support: A significant investment of $607.9 million over two years has been directed to Transport Canada to bolster the iZEV program, making electric vehicles more accessible and affordable.
- Passenger Rail Investments: A total investment of $462.4 million over five years has been allocated to VIA Rail network operations, with a focus on replacing aging fleets on routes outside the Quebec City-Windsor corridor. Furthermore, $63.1 million over three years has been earmarked to renew the Remote Passenger Rail Program, benefiting Indigenous-owned rail operators serving communities in Manitoba, Quebec, and Labrador.
Air Transportation:
- Pension Fund Investments: A working group will be established to explore opportunities for pension funds to invest in Canadian infrastructure, including airport facilities, fostering domestic investment and economic growth.
Transportation Security:
- A commitment of $108 million over five years has been allocated to enhance the Transportation Security Clearance Program, aimed at safeguarding Canada's transportation system from security threats.
Auto Theft Prevention:
- To combat auto theft, amendments to the Criminal Code and the Radiocommunication Act will be enacted to introduce new criminal offenses and regulate the sale and possession of devices used for auto theft, ensuring the safety and security of Canadians.
