Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador, Issues Statement on International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia
May 17, 2024

Today, Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador, recognizes the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia with the following statement:

“On this important day, we reaffirm our unwavering support for 2SLGBTQI+ communities in Labrador, Canada, and around the world. We recommit to building a better, fairer, and more inclusive future where everyone can be themselves – freely and without fear.

“Since the launch of the Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan in 2022, we have taken significant steps to support 2SLGBTQI+ individuals by safeguarding their rights and ensuring their safety. This includes a dedicated focus on Indigenous 2SLGBTQI+ communities, honoring the history and culture of Two-Spirit and Indigenous members across Canada. Our government has hired a Senior Advisor on Indigenous 2SLGBTQI+ within the 2SLGBTQI+ Secretariat to work with Indigenous and federal partners, addressing the unique challenges faced by Indigenous communities.

“Through Budget 2024, we are making even greater investments to combat hate toward 2SLGBTQI+ people and build a safer, more inclusive country for everyone. This year’s theme, ‘No one left behind: equality, freedom, and justice for all,’ underscores the ongoing challenges that 2SLGBTQI+ people face globally. Canada will always stand up for the human rights of 2SLGBTQI+ people, both at home and abroad.

“Last year, we proudly partnered with Rainbow Railroad, a global non-profit organization dedicated to helping 2SLGBTQI+ people fleeing violence and persecution. We are honored that many have found refuge here in Canada.

“I extend my gratitude to the numerous organizations across Canada and the world that support 2SLGBTQI+ communities and fight for their rights, including Fondation Émergence, which established the first day against homophobia in Canada in 2003. I encourage all Canadians to join me in speaking out against homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, and all forms of discrimination and violence. Together, we can build a better future, with pride.”

Yvonne Jones continues to work tirelessly for the interests of Labradorians and remains committed to creating an inclusive and supportive community for all.
