Yvonne Jones, MP for Labrador, Celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day

Labrador, Canada — Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador, is proud to join Canadians across the country in celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, 2024. This special day honors the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

"National Indigenous Peoples Day is a time to recognize and celebrate the vibrant cultures and profound histories of Indigenous communities," said Jones. "In Labrador, we are privileged to be surrounded by the Innu, Inuit, and Métis, whose cultural heritage enriches our lives and communities every day."

Jones emphasized the importance of acknowledging the contributions of Indigenous peoples in various fields, including art, science, governance, and environmental stewardship. "Indigenous knowledge and perspectives have shaped and continue to shape our country. The achievements of Indigenous leaders, educators, artists, and community members here in Labrador inspire us all," she noted.

The day is also an opportunity to reflect on the painful chapters of Canada's history, including the legacy of colonization, residential schools, and systemic discrimination. "Reconciliation is about moving forward together," Jones stated. "It requires us to listen, learn, and take meaningful action to address past injustices and build a more equitable future."

As part of her commitment to supporting Indigenous communities, Jones highlighted ongoing efforts to invest in education, healthcare, and housing, as well as initiatives that preserve and promote Indigenous languages and cultures. "We must continue to strive for justice and equality, ensuring that Indigenous voices are heard and rights are upheld," she said.

Jones concluded with a message of unity and hope: "Today, let us celebrate the richness of Indigenous cultures and the strength of Indigenous peoples. Together, we can build a Canada that truly respects and values the contributions of its First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples."
